Funeral Tents in Kenya

When a family loses someone, people arrive at the home within hours and keep coming for days: for condolences, evening prayers, funeral committee meetings and finally the burial. Tents give mourners somewhere to sit out of the sun and rain, so the family does not have to worry about shelter on top of everything else.

The Days Before the Burial

In most Kenyan homes, friends, neighbours and church members gather in the compound every evening between the death and the burial. One or two tents set up near the house give them a place to sit for prayers and for the funeral committee to meet. Because this can go on for a week or more, tents the family owns or borrows from a welfare group save repeated hire costs.

The Burial Day

The burial usually brings the largest crowd, often at the family home upcountry. Plan seating tents for the mourners facing the casket and the speakers, with the open fronts towards them so everyone can follow the service. Keep a separate tent for close family near the front, and plain walls on the side facing the road for privacy.

Getting Tents Upcountry in Time

Funerals are planned in days, not weeks, so timing matters. In Nairobi we deliver in about 3 hours. For a burial in another county, courier delivery usually takes 24–48 hours, so order as soon as the date is set. Many families instead load the tents into the vehicle travelling to the burial: each tent folds into a wheeled bag, and a 3x3m weighs 32 kg packed.

  • Confirm the burial date and location first
  • Order on WhatsApp 0756161300 with the number of mourners expected
  • Choose courier delivery, or collect in Nairobi and travel with the tents
  • Bring two people for each 3x6m tent to set it up at the home

Support Areas the Committee Will Need

Beyond seating, a funeral needs a few smaller covered spots, and a 3x3m suits each one:

  • The contributions or harambee table, where funds are received and recorded
  • Cooking and serving for the many people who are fed
  • The sound system and microphones for the service
  • A resting place for elderly relatives close to the house

Welfare Groups and Chamas

Many welfare associations, chamas and church groups buy tents that members borrow when they lose a loved one. It means a family always has shelter ready without having to find money for hire at a difficult time. Groups buying three or more tents get wholesale pricing, and matching colours make the tents easy to recognise and return.

Tents for the Number of Mourners

Seated mourners at 20–30 per 3x6m. Add 3x3m tents for the contributions table, cooking and sound.
